RETURN TO REAL
Explore messaging app use across capital cities and learn about the new social revolution.
There’s a revolution taking place in the way Australians communicate. This was our hypothesis going into this Datafication Project.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that people are not only migrating to messaging apps, but as a result, they’re returning to genuine, honest conversations with real friends.
Many of us appear to be rejecting traditional social platforms where news feeds are polluted with friends who are not friends, content is fake and where the effort of maintaining a personal brand every day is just too much hard work.
Of course the plural of ‘anecdote’ isn’t ‘evidence’ so we collected and analysed data to understand the truth. And the truth is remarkable.
We surveyed a representative sample of the population and collected data on 2,241 Australians. This figure is a larger sample than most political opinion polls. Adding census data provided a much clearer national picture.
Berta, our survey BOT was also used to collect information. She lives on Facebook Messenger and delivers questions in a simple, conversational platform.
We clearly had a lot of geeky fun visualising the data for your viewing pleasure.
